Board Development and Governance

Training for both new and continuing Board Members increases the effectiveness of Board participation.  Our Board Member “Boot Camp Series” focuses on:

  • Fiduciary responsibilities;
  • Legal documents, e.g., articles of incorporation, by-laws, and contracts;
  • Management and Board operations;
  • Memoranda of agreement and conflict of interest;
  • Management, quality, and performance improvement reports;
  • Financial reports;
  • Human Resources; and
  • Risk Management.

Programs planned over the next year include:

  • How to use your pro bono attorney effectively;
  • Insurance and liability coverage;
  • Employment law compliance;
  • Federal grant compliance;
  • Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act compliance; and
  • How to run an effective Board meeting.

The IPCE can also provide center-specific and group training opportunities to participate in the programs offered through the DC Bar Pro Bono Program.

Board training presentations are also available as part of IPCE’s self-learning resources in the Board Orientation CD/Manual, which makes sample policies, procedures, and other tools available in English and Spanish.
