Hard Times in the Land of Plenty: A Conversation with the Blues

Thursday, October 29, 2009
9:00 am - 6:00 pm

Kellogg Conference Center at Gallaudet University
800 Florida Avenue NE, Washington, DC 20002

In our twelfth year hosting distinctive, change-making conferences that are free and open to all, DCPCA invites you to join us for our 2009 Annual Meeting.  This year we draw inspiration from the blues -- considering the realities nonprofits face in hard times, and the prospect of a lasting solution that taps the "land of plenty" all around us.  With exhibitions from partners and leaders in change, DCPCA offers a glimpse of our collective potential to create systemic solutions in health care -- and to address the pervasive inequalities only made worse by hard times in our nation's capital.

Pinetop Perkins  •  Hubert Sumlin  •  The Nighthawks

DCPCA 2009 Annual Meeting entertainment

Pinetop Perkins is one of the last great Mississippi bluesmen still performing.  He began playing blues around 1927 and is widely regarded as one of the best blues pianists.  He's created a style of playing that has influenced three generations of piano players and will continue to be the yardstick by which great blues pianists are measured.

When Hubert Sumlin plays guitar he takes you to his World of Blues Feeling -- from despair to ecstasy, from delicate grace to raw power, from lost to found.  Though he's influenced and inspired many of the most famous guitar players, Hubert owns the magic.  His style is original and personal and instantly recognizable.

For more than 30 years, The Nighthawks have entertained audiences all over the world with their unique blend of blues, rock, soul, R&B, rockabilly, and swing.  Their hard driving, soulful, and sometimes raucous live performances earned them a reputation as "the world's best bar band."
