Jim Costello
Director of HIT
James Costello is the Director of HIT Operations for DCPCA. Mr. Costello joined DCPCA in February 2008 to lead the design, configuration, testing and implementation of the eClinicalWorks (eCW) electronic health record (EHR) at eight of DCPCA’s Community Health Center members in the District of Columbia.
Since successfully completing DCPCA’s eCW EHR implementation effort, he has been responsible for managing the delivery of eCW EHR hosting, maintenance, Level 2 help desk support and training services for more than 2,800 users at eight hosted health centers. Mr. Costello has extensive experience with analyzing and re-engineering operations to integrate technology into the clinical workflow to improve staff efficiency, patient satisfaction, and health outcomes. He is a firm believer in leveraging appropriate technology with human resources to produce creative solutions to the operational problems faced by clinicians as they seek to improve population health. Since 2008, Mr. Costello has been an eCW Certified Trainer.
Mr. Costello is also responsible for managing the daily operations of the Capital Partners in Care Health Information Exchange (CPC-HIE) which connects 18 organizations in the District of Columbia together to better facilitate the coordination of care for the patients they have in common. The CPC-HIE which was founded in 2014 currently contains information for over 950,000 unique patients
Mr. Costello has over 30 years’ experience in the health information technology arena.
Prior to joining DCPCA, Mr. Costello was the Chief Information Officer of Whitman-Walker Health for 10 years. From 1995-1997, Mr. Costello was Manager of Clinical Services for Humana Group Health Plan in Washington, DC. Prior to Humana, Mr. Costello was a Clinical Systems Analyst with Group Health Association from 1987-1995. He joined Group Health Association in 1982 as a Systems Trainer.
Mr. Costello is a native of St. Louis, Missouri. He received his Bachelor’s in Business Administration from St. Louis University and a Master’s in Health Administration from Washington University in St. Louis.
